Strategy Mining

Instructors: Philipp Terhörst
Shortname: Strategy Mining
Course No.: 03.996.3330
Course Type: Projektseminar

Requirements / organisational issues

The following are recommended:
- Basic knowledge of machine learning and deep learning
- Programming skills (e.g., Python, PyTorch)

Contents

The module combines modeling, algorithmic decision-making, and data-driven analysis in a project-based setting. It is based on a formal decision scenario (e.g. a board game) that is implemented, solved algorithmically, and then analysed with respect to the underlying strategies. The goal is to derive comprehensible, human-interpretable strategies and insights from complex models or game data.
Topics covered include:

  1. Formalisation and modelling of games or decision scenarios
  2. Simulation and data generation through algorithmic approaches (e.g. Monte Carlo methods, reinforcement learning)
  3. Data analysis and knowledge extraction using clustering and feature analysis
  4. Development and presentation of explainable strategies

Additional information

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Formally model and algorithmically analyse decision scenarios as games, by precisely describing state, action, and evaluation structures and selecting appropriate solution approaches.
  2. Implement, adapt, and evaluate algorithms for game analysis and strategy optimisation (e.g. Monte Carlo methods, reinforcement learning, search algorithms).
  3. Make data-driven strategies comprehensible by analysing game data, extracting underlying strategies, and interpreting and visualising them in a human-understandable way.
  4. Independently carry out a data-driven project, from problem definition through solution design, implementation, and experimentation to the evaluation and presentation of results.
