Machine Learning Lab I

Instructors: Philipp Terhörst
Shortname: Machine AI Lab
Course No.: 03.184.4615
Course Type: Projektseminar

Requirements / organisational issues

The following are recommended:
- Basic knowledge of machine learning and deep learning
- Programming skills (e.g., Python, PyTorch)

Contents

The module introduces the principles, methods, and current research topics in the field of machine learning. It focuses on the practical exploration of a self-selected specialization within this field. Students work individually or in small groups on projects in which they design, implement, and experimentally evaluate algorithms to investigate a specific research question. The projects usually focus on one of the core aspects but may also combine several topics to analyze complex interdependencies. Throughout the module, students reflect on how technical decisions influence ethical, societal, and organizational dimensions.

Additional information

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. explain and contextualize machine learning-based key concepts and challenges,
  2. understand and apply scientific methods and algorithms that operationalize these concepts,
  3. explore a specific subfield of machine learning in depth and formulate a research or practical question,
  4. implement, test, and critically evaluate appropriate methods in an experimental environment,
  5. interpret the results with sound reasoning and reflect on their ethical, societal, and technical implications

The courses Machine Learning Lab I and II are complementary and may be taken in any order.
It is possible to choose a more complex topic that can subsequently be continued in the other lab or in a final thesis.
Students interested in pursuing such a continuation are kindly asked to contact the instructor before topic assignment.
