Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
Instructors: Philipp TerhörstShortname: ML und KI
Course No.: 03.184.4605
Course Type: Vorlesung
Contents
This lecture provides a solid introduction to the core concepts, algorithms, and applications of machine learning. It emphasizes both theoretical foundations and practical implementation aspects of modern learning methods. Students will learn how models learn from data, how they are evaluated and optimized, and which methods are suitable for different types of problems. The course is structured into three main areas:
- Supervised Learning: Covers regression and classification methods including linear and logistic regression, Naive Bayes, k-Nearest Neighbors, decision trees, and Support Vector Machines.
- Unsupervised Learning: Includes clustering (e.g., k-Means), dimensionality reduction (e.g., PCA, t-SNE), density estimation (e.g., Kernel Density Estimation), and anomaly detection (e.g., Isolation Forest).
- Neural Networks and Deep Learning: Introduces the functioning, training, and architectures of neural networks, including Convolutional Neural Networks, Autoencoders, and generative models.
In addition, key concepts such as model selection, regularization, and ensemble methods are covered to build robust and generalizable models. The lecture emphasizes a deep understanding of underlying principles and prepares students for applying and advancing modern ML methods in research and practice.
Additional information
Upon successful completion of the module, students will be able to:- explain and contextualize key concepts and challenges in machine learning,
- understand and apply scientific methods and algorithms that operationalize these concepts,
- implement, test, and critically evaluate appropriate methods in an experimental environment,
- interpret the results in a well-reasoned manner and reflect on their ethical, societal, and technical implications.
